The confusion between PER, PPER and Yacht Skipper is one of the questions I get asked most. After years sailing with all three, here are the real differences.

The three key certifications

If you want to work as a skipper in Spain, you need a professional certification. According to Yemplea's data, the three most relevant are PER (recreational), PPER (professional) and Yacht Skipper. Each has different scope and opens doors to different types of employment.

PER — Recreational Vessel Skipper

The PER is Spain's most popular recreational certification. It allows you to operate vessels up to 15 meters and navigate up to 12 nautical miles from the coast. However, it does not qualify you for professional work. It's ideal for personal use or as a stepping stone to the PPER.

  • Max vessel length: 15 meters
  • Distance from coast: 12 nautical miles
  • Price: €400 – €800
  • Duration: 2-4 weeks (blended)
  • Professional use: No

PPER — Professional Recreational Vessel Skipper

The PPER is the entry-level professional certification. It allows you to operate recreational vessels up to 24 meters for commercial purposes (charter, passenger transport, excursions). It's the most demanded certification in the Balearic nautical sector. Check our nautical training section to find accredited centers.

  • Max vessel length: 24 meters
  • Distance from coast: 60 nautical miles
  • Price: €500 – €900
  • Duration: 3-6 weeks (blended)
  • Professional use: Yes
  • Prerequisites: PER + 6 months of sea time

Yacht Skipper

For larger vessels and offshore navigation. Allows you to operate yachts up to 24 meters with no distance limitation from the coast. It's the natural next step after the PPER for oceanic crossings or superyacht work.

  • Max vessel length: 24 meters
  • Distance from coast: Unlimited
  • Price: €500 – €1,000
  • Duration: 4-8 weeks (blended)
  • Professional use: Yes (with prior PPER)

Which one should you choose?

If your goal is working in charter in the Balearics, the PPER is your certification. If you want to sail for pleasure, the PER is enough. And if you're looking to make offshore passages or access higher-category yachts, aim for the Yacht Skipper.

On Yemplea you can filter job offers by required certification and find employment that matches your qualification level.
