Is the nautical sector for you? 10 questions to find out
It's not for everyone (and that's OK)
Working on yachts is an incredible experience, but it's not for everyone. Before investing time and money in nautical certifications, ask yourself these 10 questions with total honesty. At Yemplea we see hundreds of profiles every month and know what works and what doesn't.
The 10 questions
1. Can you be away from home for months?
A season in the Balearics lasts 5-6 months. If you have family responsibilities that are hard to delegate or struggle being away from your circle, life on board can be tough.
2. Do you get seasick?
Seems obvious, but many candidates don't consider it. If you get seasick on a ferry, a yacht will be a problem. The good news: many people adapt in 2-3 days.
3. Can you live in small spaces?
Crew cabins measure 4-6 m². You'll share a bathroom. Your personal space will be a bunk and a drawer. If you need lots of space, think twice.
4. Do you speak English?
You don't need to be bilingual, but functional B2 is the minimum. Without English, your options shrink dramatically.
5. Are you physically fit?
Deck work is physical: handling lines, scrubbing decks, carrying provisions. Interior is less physical but equally demanding in endurance.
6. Can you follow orders without questioning them?
A yacht has a strict hierarchy. The captain is in charge. If you struggle with authority, you'll have problems on board.
7. Are you flexible with schedules?
Forget office hours. In charter you can work 14 hours a day. Days off are irregular. If you need routine and predictability, the nautical sector will frustrate you.
8. Can you stay calm under pressure?
Demanding guests, bad weather, mechanical breakdowns. The sea doesn't forgive those who lose their nerve.
9. Are you willing to start from the bottom?
It doesn't matter your previous experience on land. On your first boat you'll start with the least glamorous tasks. Humility is the first skill.
10. Are you doing it for the right reasons?
If your main motivation is "free travel" or "Instagram photos", reconsider. Those who thrive love the sea, enjoy service and value the professional experience.
