The 8 best ports to find nautical jobs in Spain
I've worked in ports all along the Spanish coast and each one has its own character. Looking for work in Ibiza is nothing like Las Palmas. Here's where the most opportunities are and why.
Spain, the epicentre of nautical employment in the Mediterranean
Spain is the third European country with the most yacht berths, and crew demand grows every year. According to Yemplea's data, not all ports are the same: some focus on luxury charter, others on winter maintenance and others on regattas. Knowing the differences will help you focus your search.
1. Ibiza — Marina Botafoch and Club Náutico
The epicentre of luxury charter in Spain. From May to October, Ibiza receives hundreds of yachts that need temporary crew. It's the best port to start if you're looking for seasonal charter employment.
Season: May – October | Most demanded positions: Skipper, deckhand, stewardess, chef
2. Palma de Mallorca — STP, Club de Mar, Marina Port Adriano
The capital of the nautical industry in Spain. Palma combines charter, maintenance (STP is the largest yacht shipyard in the Mediterranean) and permanent superyacht bases. There's work year-round.
Season: Year-round | Most demanded positions: Engineer, deckhand, captain, technicians
3. Barcelona — Port Olímpic, Marina Vela, OneOcean
Major hub with high volume of yachts in transit. Barcelona is also home to yacht management companies that hire crew.
Season: April – November | Most demanded positions: Skipper, deckhand, stewardess
4. Málaga — Puerto Banús, La Bajadilla
Puerto Banús is synonymous with luxury and superyachts. The Costa del Sol attracts yachts year-round thanks to the climate. A good market for jobs on foreign-flagged yachts.
Season: Year-round (summer peak) | Most demanded positions: Stewardess, chef, deckhand
5. Valencia — Marina de Valencia, Real Club Náutico
Growing port in the nautical sector, especially after the America's Cup. Good charter and excursion offerings.
Season: May – October | Most demanded positions: Skipper, deckhand
6. Alicante — Marina Deportiva, Real Club de Regatas
Starting point for international regattas and recreational yacht base. Smaller market but with less competition.
Season: April – October | Most demanded positions: Deckhand, skipper
7. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria — ARC / Muelle Deportivo
Mandatory stop for yachts crossing the Atlantic (ARC route). Winter employment for crossing crew. Perfect for accumulating sea miles.
Season: October – January | Most demanded positions: Skipper, deckhand, chef
8. Menorca — Port of Mahón
The largest natural harbour in the Mediterranean. More exclusive and peaceful market, ideal for those seeking a less crowded experience.
Season: June – September | Most demanded positions: Skipper, deckhand, stewardess
Final tip
Don't limit yourself to one port. The crew that thrives best moves with the seasons: Balearics in summer, Canaries in winter, and Palma or Barcelona for stable year-round work. On Yemplea you can prepare your training and set up zone alerts so you never miss an opportunity.
