Marine engineer: the most demanded and best-paid position on yachts

Motor marino profesional representando el empleo de mecánico naval en yates

I've been at STP Palma for six years and I can tell you: good marine engineers have more job offers than they can handle. If you're into technical work, this sector has a bright future.

The engineer: talent shortage, high demand

The marine engineer is probably the position with the greatest supply-demand imbalance in the Spanish nautical sector. On the Yemplea platform, engineer vacancies fill faster than any other position. Training is long and specific, meaning there are few qualified professionals. This translates into high salaries and many opportunities.

Main duties

  • Maintenance and repair of main and auxiliary engines
  • Electrical, hydraulic and HVAC systems
  • Generators, watermakers and fuel systems
  • Spare parts management and preventive maintenance planning
  • Maritime safety regulation compliance

Required certification

To work as an engineer on professional yachts you need the Marine Engineer (Mecánico Naval) certification. It's a vocational or university qualification that includes sea time practice. You also need:

  • STCW Basic + engineering modules
  • ISM Medical Certificate
  • Technical English

Salary

  • Sole engineer (20-30 m yachts): €3,500 – €5,000/month
  • 2nd engineer (superyachts): €4,000 – €5,500/month
  • Chief engineer (40+ m superyachts): €5,500 – €7,000/month

Plus accommodation, meals and charter tips.

Why is demand so high?

Spain's yacht fleet grows every year, but marine engineer training is long (2-3 years of vocational education + sea time). Many experienced engineers emigrate to international markets with even higher salaries (Monaco, Antibes). This leaves a professional deficit in Spain that benefits those entering the sector.

How to get started

If you have training in industrial mechanics, electromechanics or engineering, the jump to the nautical sector is relatively short. Complete the Marine Engineer certification, get your STCW and look for your first opportunity on Yemplea.
