The origins: the French Riviera in the 1960s

Yacht charter as we know it today was born on the French Côte d'Azur in the 1960s. Aristocrats and Hollywood stars like Grace Kelly and Aristotle Onassis popularized the idea of renting yachts for exclusive Mediterranean holidays.

The first charter yachts were classic sailing vessels converted to accommodate guests. Crew was minimal: a skipper, a cook and perhaps a deckhand. Nothing like today's professional teams.

The 80s-90s: professionalization

With industry growth came the first charter management companies. Service standards were established, crews were professionalized and the first international certifications appeared (STCW in 1978, updated in 1995).

The western Mediterranean consolidated as the epicentre: Monaco, Antibes, Sardinia and the Greek islands dominated the market.

The Balearic boom: 2000-2020

From 2000 onwards, Ibiza and Mallorca began competing head-to-head with the French Riviera. The advantages were clear: similar climate, lower costs, modern port infrastructure and a nightlife that attracted a younger, more diverse clientele.

Palma de Mallorca became a maintenance hub with STP (Service & Technology Port), the largest yacht shipyard in the Mediterranean. Ibiza positioned itself as the quintessential luxury charter destination for the European summer.

The present: Spain as a nautical power

In 2026, Spain is the third largest yacht charter market in Europe, behind only France and Italy. The Balearics lead by far, but the Costa del Sol, Barcelona and the Canaries gain market share every year.

Digitalization has democratized access: platforms like Yemplea allow any qualified professional to access job offers that previously moved only through personal contacts.

What's next?

Trends point to more sustainable yachts (hybrid propulsion, recycled materials), experiential charters (adventure, wellness, gastronomy) and even greater crew professionalization. For sector workers, this means more nautical training, better conditions and more opportunities. On Yemplea you can browse active offers and prepare for the next season.
