STCW Basic Guide 2026: what it is, modules, cost and where to get it
When I started at the STP yard six years ago, the STCW was the first thing they asked for. Without it, you don't set foot on a boat professionally. Simple as that.
What is STCW?
STCW stands for Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers. It's an international convention by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) that establishes the minimum training and competency requirements for maritime workers.
STCW Basic is the entry-level module and is mandatory for anyone who wants to work professionally on board a vessel, regardless of position: skipper, deckhand, stewardess, chef or engineer. On Yemplea, all job offers verify that you hold this certification.
The 4 modules of STCW Basic
1. Personal Survival Techniques (PST)
You learn to survive at sea in an emergency. Includes:
- Use of life jackets and survival suits
- Boarding life rafts
- Cold water survival
- Distress signals and use of pyrotechnic equipment
Practiced in swimming pools and open water. It's the most physical module of the course.
2. Fire Prevention and Firefighting (FP)
Training to prevent and fight fires on board:
- Fire types and extinguishing agents
- Use of extinguishers, hoses and foam equipment
- Respiratory protection (SCBA)
- Evacuation tactics and smoke navigation
Includes practical exercises with real fire at specialized facilities.
3. Elementary First Aid (EFA)
Basic healthcare knowledge at sea:
- CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation)
- Bleeding control
- Treatment of burns, fractures and hypothermia
- Recovery position and casualty transport
4. Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (PSSR)
Theoretical module about life on board:
- Ship emergency procedures
- Marine pollution prevention
- Human relations on board and teamwork
- Fatigue and its effects on safety
How long is the course?
The complete STCW Basic lasts between 5 and 7 days (40-70 teaching hours), depending on the center. Most centers offer it in an intensive one-week format from Monday to Friday.
How much does it cost?
The price varies by center and location, ranging between €400 and €700. Some centers offer discounts for unemployed individuals or packages with other certifications (FSI, ORR). Check the nautical training section on Yemplea for more information.
Where to get it in Spain?
STCW Basic is taught at centers accredited by the DGMM. The main ones are located in:
- Palma de Mallorca: several centers with experience in professional nautical training.
- Barcelona: wide range of accredited centers.
- Valencia, Alicante, Málaga: centers available along the entire Mediterranean coast.
- Cádiz, Las Palmas: options on the Atlantic coast and Canary Islands.
Check the updated list of centers on the DGMM website.
Validity and renewal
STCW Basic is valid for 5 years. To renew it you need:
- Proof of at least 12 months of sea service in the last 5 years, or
- Complete a 2-3 day refresher course.
It's important to monitor the expiry date: if your STCW has expired, you won't be able to work professionally at sea.
Is it mandatory for all positions?
Yes. STCW Basic is required for every professional position on board, no exceptions. Whether you're a skipper, deckhand, cook or stewardess. It's the first certification you should obtain if you want to work at sea. My advice: get it done as soon as possible, and don't let it expire without noticing.
On Yemplea, the system automatically verifies that your STCW certifications are current and alerts you when the renewal date approaches.
