7 mistakes to avoid when looking for nautical jobs
After reviewing profiles and applications for five seasons, these are the mistakes I see over and over. They're easy to avoid once you know what they are.
Learning from others' mistakes
After connecting hundreds of workers with nautical companies on Yemplea, we've identified the most repeated mistakes. Avoiding them can be the difference between landing your ideal job or missing the season entirely.
1. Generic CV without nautical format
Sending a 3-page CV designed for hospitality doesn't work on yachts. Captains want to see on a single page: professional photo, certifications, sea experience, languages and availability.
2. Expired certifications
STCW expires every 5 years, the ISM medical certificate every 2. If your documents are expired, no yacht owner will hire you. Check dates BEFORE starting your search.
3. Not speaking English
English is not optional. Even on Spanish-flagged yachts, guests are international. B2 level is the functional minimum. Without English, your options shrink to 20% of the market.
4. Searching too late
If you start looking in June, most positions for the season are already filled. Yacht owners hire between February and April. Start your search by March at the latest.
5. No online presence
A complete profile on a platform like Yemplea with photo, uploaded certifications and configured preferences gives you visibility with companies. Without an online profile, you depend only on word of mouth.
6. Rejecting the first job over salary
Your first yacht job won't be the best paid. But the experience you gain in a full season is worth more than any salary difference. Take the opportunity, prove your value and negotiate better next season.
7. Not following up
Applying to an offer and waiting isn't enough. If you don't hear back in 48 hours, send a follow-up message. Captains receive dozens of applications and appreciate proactivity.
