Becoming a charter skipper was the move that changed my career the most. The path isn't short, but it's worth every step. Here's exactly how to do it.

The charter skipper: the most in-demand profile

The charter skipper is the most sought-after professional in the Spanish nautical sector, especially in the Balearics. They are responsible for navigation, onboard safety and, in many cases, the complete client experience. According to Yemplea data, skipper job offers grow by 30% each season.

Required certifications

For vessels up to 24 metres

  • PPER (Professional Recreational Vessel Skipper) — Licensed for up to 24m in coastal navigation (up to 12 miles)
  • ISM Medical Certificate — Mandatory, periodic renewal
  • Basic STCW — Maritime safety training
  • Restricted Radio Operator (ORR) — Maritime communications
  • Initial Health Training (FSI) — Onboard first aid

For larger vessels

  • Coastal Skipper — Up to 24m with no distance-from-coast limit
  • Offshore Skipper — Up to 24m in ocean navigation
  • Yacht Captain — No limits on length or navigation

Required experience

  • Minimum 1-2 seasons as deckhand or second skipper
  • Knowledge of the navigation area (anchorages, coves, ports)
  • Experience in client management and premium service
  • English B2+ (C1 preferred for international charter)

Salaries in 2026

  • Junior skipper (first season): €2,500-3,500/month
  • Experienced skipper: €3,500-5,000/month
  • Superyacht skipper: €5,000-10,000/month
  • Tips: €500-3,000 per week of charter

Where to find jobs

  1. Yemplea — Offers filtered by position, area and certification
  2. Direct contact at marinas during pre-season (March-April)
  3. Local nautical sector networking

Career progression

PPER → Coastal Skipper → Offshore Skipper → Yacht Captain. Each certification opens the door to larger and better-paid vessels. The key is to accumulate sea miles and maintain a good review track record on Yemplea.
