What is STCW and why do you need it?

The STCW (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers) is the international convention that regulates seafarer training worldwide. The certificate you need is called STCW Basic Safety, and it is the mandatory minimum requirement to work professionally aboard any vessel over 24 metres under a professional flag.

If you want to work on a superyacht, a professional charter vessel or any merchant ship, without STCW you won't get hired. It's the nautical equivalent of a driving licence: non-negotiable.
